Memorial Day weekend is about more than barbecues, movies and the beach. It’s a time to honor and remember those we’ve lost and who lost so much by serving the country in the military.
Memorial Day weekend is about more than barbecues, movies and the beach. It’s a time to honor and remember those we’ve lost and who lost so much by serving the country in the military.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3830 is hosting a Memorial Day remembrance ceremony starting at 10 a.m. Monday at Veterans Cemetery No. 1 in Hilo. The public is invited.
“Our post and auxiliary are deeply honored to be hosting this year’s ceremony in partnership with other East Hawaii organizations and volunteers,” said retired Army Col. Debra M. Lewis, VFW Post 3830 commander. “We’re telling everyone to please come on out and join us for an exciting and patriotic program to honor our veterans.”
The Hawaii County Band led by bandmaster Paul Arceo will play a prelude and many patriotic numbers. Retired Army Lt. Col. Douglass S. Adams is master of ceremonies, Vietnam War Army veteran Michael Doolittle will deliver the Memorial Day address and Hilo Civil Air Patrol Cadet Maj. Sam Marrack will recite “In Flanders Field.”
The program also includes vocalists Ian McMillan and Christy Lassiter, the presence of Youth Challenge Academy members and Boys Scouts, ecumenical prayers and closing remarks by Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim.
Lewis emphasized that many community organizations and volunteers are working to make this year’s ceremony a fitting and memorable tribute. Access the cemetery on Homelani Lane off Kapiolani Street.
